The Director-General of Research and Innovation of the European Commission Mr. Marc Lemaître has opened on the 23rd May 2023 the Workshop “RFCS Transformational Projects for A new ERA” organized by EURACOAL in the European Parliament.

He has very positively commented : ‘‘After two years of implementation of the RFCS programme, we can now happily say that the new projects selected for funding following the last Calls fully and substantially contribute to the transformation of the coal sector in line with the Just Transition Mechanism’’.

Have a look at the 3 projects ((pilot and demonstration, accompanying measures and research project, respectively) presented during the event:
– REM (on the reduction of methane emissions in former coal mines or in coal mines in process of closure)
– POTENTIALS (Joint potential to stimulate new economic value, activities, and developing jobs, in the EU Coal Regions).
– GreenJOBS (Repurposing underground coal mines by deploying emerging Renewable Energy & Circular Economy technologies to maximize the number of Green Jobs).

As closing speaker, I have highlighted the changes in objectives for the RFCS since 2021 in order to be fully integrated in the EGD and in the JT, and provided some statistics on MS participation in the programme since 2015.
